Celebrating the Ways our Kids Thrive

Some days advocacy is the quiet courage of posting your disabled kid’s win on Facebook to people aren’t on the journey. When I hop on Facebook, my feed is mostly filled with neurotypical kids’ milestones - from first words to proms and getting their driver’s license. I rarely see kids with disabilities outside of the parent groups I joined.

But this weekend (and in the month of Nai’s birth), I decided to celebrate her award this past school year, and I am still responding to all the kind words! I know there’s a ton of ableism out there, but sometimes that means we’re constantly preaching to the choir, the parents already on the journey - all the faithful allies.

But advocating is also reaching the people who haven’t gotten yet… haven’t thought about the ways they see disability as a dirty word & showing them that difference isn’t a source of shame but strength, and sometimes that looks like a Saturday morning Facebook posts with a link to an advocacy step they can take for our community because #disabiltypride matters.

I shared this on Instagram, but felt led to also uplift it here on the blog. Feel free to share it with another Mama who needs these reminders.
